Why do dentists and optometrists have to be medical doctors?

I understand they need to write prescriptions and know how something simple in the eye or tooth can lead to widespread sepsis, but is it really necessary for them to go to medical school for 4 yrs and learn 90% of unnecessary, irrelevant information for all those yrs??
