Why do we spend so much in foreign aid? Why do we even spend in foreign aid?

According to a recent statistic in 2008, our government spends upward of 25 billion dollars in foreign aid, and mostly to third world countries at that. Why should I care if people are dying of starvation or poverty? It's not my fault, and yet, the government uses the taxpayer's hard earned dollars to feed these people. Why? Shouldn't we abolish this nonsensical policy? Charity has got to be one of the most stupid ideas ever conjured up by the human mind, and it is relatively useless to the benefactor. Should we not stop all foreign aid and p a bill against this policy that has been harming the American taxpayer for far too long?
